McCain Changes Tax Talk

Via The Carpetbagger Report, I missed McCain's latest flip flop over the weekend. If there's anything that will set so-called conservatives off it's tax talk. They love their small government, less taxes pledges. So when their candidate for president promises that he will never consider a tax increase conservative boners begin popping everywhere. If you can mix no new taxes with some form of making government smaller into a speech there's a good chance you can be a GOP candidate in any political race. What you do once you're elected is a different story, just talk the game is what the modern GOP is about.

Anyway, to get back on track, a few months ago McCain promised The Corner's Ramesh Ponnuru that there were no circumstances where he would ever consider a tax increase. As recent as two weeks ago McCain again pledged that he opposed any effort at raising taxes. Then over the weekend McCain changed his tune when speaking to George Stephanopoulos and said that all options including a payroll tax increase were on the table. That's a drastic difference from a pledge just two weeks ago to never consider a tax increase. The Carpetbagger lists this as McCain's 71st flip flop.

This one being on taxes is going to sting.
