No blog post can do justice to the history that was made in America yesterday. It just can't. It's been a long year and I think everyone is glad it's over. Political campaigns have a way of exhausting the populace being doubly true in a presidential year. It will be nice to have a sense that the direction of our country is no longer pointing in reverse.

The Democratic Party cannot use this historic victory to make the same misjudgments the Republicans did in 2000 and 2004. Do not treat this as a mandate for the country because it isn't. Do not treat this as a revolution because it isn't. Do not treat this as political capital because it isn't. Do not treat this as a permanent majority because it isn't. This historic event is an opportunity to serve the greatest country in the world granted to Barack Obama and his Party by the people. It is not a God-granted destiny to the DNC. This new government will have no more claim to power than the people will allow it. And most of all it must be understood and never taken for granted that government is there for the people, granted by the people. A lot can be learned to guide our future by this very recent history.
