Since day one of the now 2,071 day war in Iraq, President Bush, his neocon war enablers and his Republican supporters have called ANY timetable for withdrawal as a "blueprint for defeat," as a "mistake," as "retreat," and as a "death sentence." Anyone who dare spoke of a timetable or a withdrawal date was told they were emboldening the terrorist enemy while simultaneously having their patriotism questioned.
On Monday the Bush administration called the new agreement approved by the Iraqi cabinet that would bring every occupying troop home by 2011 an "aspiration" rather than a stark departure from their five year stance on absolutely no timetables. In other words, it was wishful thinking on the part of the Iraqis.
After realizing that the Bush administration no longer mattered and that the Iraqi "aspiration" was actually a complete reversal of Bush policy, the Bush administration today called the agreement a "victory." I suppose when all else fails, declare victory and go home.
Look at Iraq folks, it's an example of victorious early 21st century American interventionism. I'm ready for the victory parades and Mission Accomplished banners, balloons and marching bands.
“Once you hear the details of victory, it is hard to distinguish it from a defeat”-- Jean-Paul Sartre
