Abortion Labels

Awwww finally. Via Steve Benen, I found some more evidence to back up my claim that political labels are stupid. More specifically the abortion debate labels in America are about as inaccurate and lazy as one will find anywhere.

Last week neocons and right wingers were salivating at two polls showing for the first time ever more people considered themselves pro-life versus pro-choice. Typically a person who is pro-life would be against abortion. But even according to the two polls from last week, 74% believed abortion should be a choice sometimes. Such data makes the pro-life label very inaccurate.

CNN released a much more accurate way of polling such responses by asking do you think Roe v. Wade should be overturned. 68% believe Roe should be left alone. In other words, a huge, overwhelming majority believe a woman has a right to privacy and that abortion should be a choice. Does that make America more pro-choice than pro-life? Nope. Just means Americans do support keeping abortion legal.
