Taking a break from my inland hurricane blogging, I am impatiently approaching my fifth straight day without power. At the moment I'm on gasoline generated power that is loud and about as fuel efficient as a lawn mower. Trying to catch up on the last four days of civilization I've missed out on, I saw where the White House announced the budget deficit will likely hit $1.84 trillion this year. The new number surpasses the $1.7 trillion figure released earlier in the year by the Obama administration. That's a dang ton of money. I'm surprised it's not over $2 trillion honestly. The administration still maintains it will slash that amount in half by 2012. Good luck with that. The best way to crack down on deficit spending would be to eliminate corporate tax loop holes and corporate tax evasion such as corporations that conveniently move their headquarters to some deserted island to avoid paying taxes and to cheat the government out of tax revenue. That would make a big dent in the deficit. The second best thing to do would be to spend less. Both answers are easier said than done but if revenues do not rise then spending must slow down dramatically. Unless the stimulus spending kicks in rather soon, we all could be in for a long, hot summer. And I better have my power back on before then.
