I'm guessing this was on Fox News but I'm not sure. TPM's Livewire tracking system is a little confusing. Hopefully I'll be able to get a better clarification in a moment.
Livewire is reporting it as Romney told Fox News that President Obama is "changing the nature of America" by running up massive amounts of debt.
This is a discussion that should be in every classroom, work place, office water cooler, news channel, internet chat house, and/or blog in America. President Obama's policies have only accounted for $1.4 trillion of debt since taking office in 2009.
There is no way to make this any clearer. As it stands, George Bush policies have added over $7 trillion to the federal debt. His policies, like his tax cuts for the rich, Endless War, and a huge unfunded expansion of Medicare will continue to add to the debt even though he is out of office because the policies are still in place and still no money has been raised to pay for any of it. No one has added more to the debt in terms of real dollars than George W. Bush.
Reagan tripled the federal debt in 8 years leaving it at roughly $5 trillion when he left office. The first George Bush then added another $1.5 trillion. Clinton added another $1.4 trillion. King George II added another $6 trillion while in office and another trillion or so since he left office. For a Republican to now be chiding anyone for the federal debt is extremely insane.
If you want to blame President Obama for allowing Bush's policies to continue on without being offset or one penny raised to pay for them, then I'm with ya. But to suggest the president is changing the very fabric of America because of debt is a lie. It should be called out every time Romney and the rest of his Tea Bagging Republicans repeat it.
