Then I learned that Souder's mistress is actually the person in the video he is having a conversation with concerning abstinence education. Well, then, that changes everything. Not only is it comical, it's disturbing.
In Souder's defense, abstinence only education means waiting until you're married. Souder and his mistress were married, just not too each other. After watching the video, I don't see anywhere in it that Souder says extramarital activities interfere with abstinence education. So please kids. Wait until you're married and then go and get a hump buddy. It's what God (and our Founding Fathers) intended.

Souder releases a statement that has some truth to it, given the circumstances and all:
"I sinned against God, my wife and my family by having a mutual relationship with a part-time member of my staff. "In the poisonous environment of Washington, D.C., any personal failing is seized upon, often twisted, for political gain. I am resigning rather than to put my family through that painful, drawn-out process... by stepping aside, my mistake cannot be used as a political football in a partisan attempt to undermine the cause for which I have labored all my adult life."
It's true Souder rode the 1994 Republican Moral Values wave for all it was worth. But when it came to judging other politicians, such as Bill Clinton, Souder did exactly what he says above. He refused seizing upon personal failures for twisted political gain in 1998 and voted against the three articles of impeachment. Good for him.
As a champion of traditional values and marriage, Souder is not so honest. And when it comes to abiding by his word, Souder couldn't quite live up to the standard he wanted to set for everyone else. Upon taking office in 1994, he signed a pledge limiting his time in Congress to two terms. God must have told him to break that pledge because in 2008 he was elected to his 8th. This is why it's best to take the low road rather than the holier than thou road. Just saying.
