Had a nice discussion over the weekend about the terrible spending spree the current administration has went on causing the nation to run trillion dollar budget deficits. As you might have guessed, there's a couple things wrong with that statement. Nevertheless, factually inaccurate information has never forced Republicans to stop believing something or from spreading it. Yes, Republicans, including many of my friends, really do believe Barack Obama has caused the huge deficits we have today and that he alone is responsible for our exploding debt.
In their world the recession that began almost two years before Obama took office had nothing to do with the drop in tax revenue. Also, two inherited on-going endless wars completely unpaid for had nothing to do with our budget mess either. Neither did the completely unfunded $700 billion Republican expansion of Medicare. And don't dare blame TARP on anyone but Obama either. No they believe it was huge spending increases and ginormous growth in government that began with President Obama that is responsible for today's mess.
Paul Krugman shows us why blaming out of control spending is wrong.
As you can see, spending has not been out of control. When you factor in the Great Recession, spending is actually much lower than it should be. Any exponential rise in spending has come from unemployment benefits, which is a factor of the recession. Don't forget either that all of it, the recession, the wars, the trillion deficit, the enormous federal debt, all of it was inherited and not at all caused by President Obama. So when people wanna talk about spending being out of control, or that Obama is spending way too much, they really have no clue what they are talking about.
