Instead of a call for shared sacrifice, we gave tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans in a time of war for the very first time in our history,” Obama said. “Instead of leadership that called us to come together, we got patriotism defined as the property of one party, and used as a political wedge to take us into a war that should have never been authorized and never been waged.”When people ask where did it all go wrong, the answer is above. There is no war effort. There are no war bonds being issued. There was no plan to capture bin Laden. There was no plan for a post occupation of Afghanistan. Nothing has been asked of us except blind obedience.
The right wing loves to say that Iraq and the war on terror is the calling of our generation-- WWIII, or IV-- if that's the case then how in the world can we fight it by cutting taxes and ill-planned invasions of countries that had nothing to do with 9/11. If this war in Iraq is as important or even more important than WWII, how could we have possibly won that war with tax cuts, shopping sprees, no call to service whatsoever, no war bonds, no national mobilization at all. There is no way we could have without all of that and so much more. Why, then, should we treat this great war any differently? There's just no excuse, none.
