Sen. Mitch McConnell |
Via a letter signed by all 42 Senate Republicans, the minority party is demanding they get to legislate for the entire country:
"Last month, the American people issued their verdict on the Democrat's priorities," replied Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky. "We need to show the American people that we care more about them and their ability to pay their bills than we do about the special interests' legislative Christmas-list."It doesn't work this way. Even come January when the GOP gets to increase its share of senate seats, they will still be not only the minority in the senate but in the whole government. Democrats will control the White House and the Senate. Republicans only the house.
Moreover, Sen. McConnell is absolutely wrong about the American people issuing a verdict on Democratic priorities, especially in terms of who won what. Republicans did not gain a majority in the chamber McConnell belongs. That means what your party may view as a priority was not accepted by the American people for advancement in your chamber of government. You are still the minority Mr. McConnell. Pretend all you want, but you are not in charge. Your policies do not placed above the majorities.
Also, when you pledge to block all bills until you get your way it's called obstructionism. The press should label it as such.
Furthermore, the ability of 42 senators to block anything and hold the upper chamber hostage is proof positive that filibuster reform must a priority for the next session. When the minority can prance around on their twinkle toes while crying until they get their way, then there's really something wrong with the functionality of government.
