Even though I know it's not going to happen, I can't help but feel remorse for not having Newt Gingrich be the GOP's latest crusty old white guy. Why? Well, one thing a Newt candidacy would do is make the 2012 race about issues. Newt loves to talk issues. He's actually really good at it. One of the best, maybe second only to Bill Clinton. Probably one of Newt's best performances is his beautiful defense of the individual mandate from as far back as the eons of 2008. Newt is a wonk, I'll give him that. Without Newt there really isn't a candidate that will talk issues.
Proof that Newt would much prefer to talk rather than smear is yesterday in Storm Lake, IA (I've been there biatches!). When asked by a very crazy, right wing extremist and Fox News viewer why President Obama is allowed to be president since he has never shown his birth certificate (which is a total lie), Newt immediately struck the question down and demanded the issues are what presidential politics should be about. Kudos to Newt for smacking the crazy. It really is a shame there isn't any other Republican candidate able and willing to talk issues with President Obama.
