Republicans Attack War Time President

My boy Steve Benen:
Let me tell you what would happen if there was a Republican incumbent president and a Democratic candidate said this: we'd spend the next several months talking about why the Democrat no longer believes Americans should take pride in their country. The candidate's patriotism would be routinely questioned and he'd be asked repeatedly why he thinks it is no longer true the American people should hold their heads high.
And yet there was Mitt Romney, effectively arguing that the only way to have national pride is to give him power.
Benen is writing about Romney going around the country saying the president has made the economy worse and has made people ashamed of being American.  Could you imagine what would have happened if John Kerry had said that about George Bush?  We absolutely would have had a huge national debate about the minority party attacking the nation's leader in time of war, and how unpatriotic the whole thing is.  It would have been an orgasmic explosion on Fox News had the Democratic nominee said anything remotely close to that.

Not to mention, Romney routinely says Obama attacks regular Americans.  Because, as we all know, the president is waging class warfare and is bent on destroying our country.  This is a daily talking point on Fox News and from the GOP.  Something that is never allowed from Democrats.

It's a way for Republicans to attack Obama's "otherness" to drive up fear.  Bring up the fact Mitt Romney is a product of polygamy or that he believes God lives on Planet Kolob?  No chance in the media following that lead.  But Obama's birth certificate, which has been proven a thousand times over as authentic and a completely unfounded lie by the GOP and Republicans call that a legitimate issue.
