Remember that he was very much opposed by the establishment party in 1976 and that even in 1980 the eastern elite wing supported Bush 1 until Reagan proved so popular with the middle class and swing Democrats in the early primaries. So he overcame the powers that be back then, too."
Very true. Reagan was, if anything, a master of personality. Unmatched except for Clinton in my opinion.
