For over five years the Bush administration and every chickenhawk right wing nut job in America has been fending off calls for any timetable that might bring about an end to their Glorious war in Iraq. All within two weeks time the GOP has lost control of power in America and now Iraq. People have been saying the Democratic victory in early November was the final nail in the neoconservative coffin but in my opinion it was Sunday's vote in Iraq.
The security agreement "approved Sunday requires coalition forces to withdraw from Iraqi cities and towns by the summer of 2009 and from the country by the end of 2011. An earlier version had language giving some flexibility to that deadline, with both sides discussing timetables and timelines for withdrawal, but the Iraqis managed to have the deadline set in stone, a significant negotiating victory," reports the The Times.
Such an agreement, which still has to be approved by the Iraqi Parliament, would never have been possible with Republicans still in control of the American government. War without end was their calling and anything less than that was viewed as weakness and unpatriotic. In the words of one Iraqi politician, "[i]f Republicans were still there, there would be no respect for this timetable. This is a positive step to have the same theory about the timetable as Mr. Obama." Obama's victory on Nov. 4th made this agreement possible and should give us all hope that the war is coming to an end.
