Bush sees himself as relevant and rising in popularity say his aides. The Bush administration views recent polling (three solid years worth) as being inaccurate, biased and with flawed population samples. Amazing.
It would be so easy to cast this aside as yet another Bush Fantasy World item. But this is so emblematic of the current GOP it begs further mentioning.
This is really how they view the world. The most unpopular president in modern history and their reaction is the data is flawed. Three solid years of gutter ratings and the data is flawed! Not that President Bush is unpopular but that people are just Bush Haters and are part of some sort of media driven hysteria. Not that we have went 8 years without an energy policy, but that Clinton should have drilled in Alaska in the 90s. Not that we are still fighting in Iraq-- a country that had nothing to do with 9/11--, but that the American people can't stomach a good fight. Not that Bush never vetoed a single piece of legislation for 6 years but that he has used his "power intelligently."
The last time President Bush had a majority approval rating was in January of 2005. He hasn't seen a 40% approval rating since March of 2006. But he's an intelligent and relevant president. There's more than just denial taking place here. It's systematic revisionist history. Not only do Republicans think Bush is doing a great job and that everyone else are Bush Haters, but they also think he's not relevant to any political discussion today. They want to forget the last 8 years and just move on as if Bush never happened. To them Bush never did happen. At least he didn't happen they way reality views him. In their world he's rising in popularity and victim to inaccurate polling data. Is there any reason why this Party, these people, need to have another 4 years to run this country?
