Allowing Joe Lieberman any leadership role in the next Congress is not a very good way to start off with Democratic voters. I could probably link all day long to left of center websites scolding Obama for only giving Lieberman a slap on the wrist for his complete betrayal. But I'm not going to. I totally disagree with Obama's decision, and I say Obama because without his approval Harry Reid would never let Lieberman stay. Hopefully I'm wrong about this but I see no reason whatsoever to play nice with Joe Lieberman. There are other ways to search for national unity without giving anything to Lieberman.
*Update:
Howard Dean confirms the Dem caucus was only following Obama's wishes.
I've been trying to figure out why Obama would want to play nice with Lieberman and the only reason I can come up with is for his vote. Maybe Obama has cut a deal with Lieberman on health care reform or on a new energy bill, both of which I would say is worth keeping Lieberman as chairman.
I think Iraq is a done deal. Obama's bringing the troops home and he doesn't need Lieberman to make that happen. But for his new health care plan he'll need Lieberman's vote and for a new energy policy he'll need every vote he can muster. If that's the case I can understand Obama's decision. If not and Lieberman sides with the Repubs and holds up Obama's agenda then Obama will be the biggest push over ever. All I can say now is I want my health care plan and I want my energy bill.
